NEW ORLEANS - After a 2005 season spent on the road while displaced by Hurricane Katrina, the Tulane Green Wave football team will return to New Orleans on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 in the first of five 2006 home games in the schedule announced today by Tulane and Conference USA.
The Green Wave will play host to Conference USA rival SMU, one of four schools which played host to Tulane teams last fall, in their first "true" home game in two years, on Sept. 30. Tulane will also welcome C-USA foes Rice (Oct. 7), Southern Miss (Nov. 11) and UCF (Nov. 18) to the Louisiana Superdome, along with non-conference visitor Army (Oct. 28).
"We worked closely with our conference office to fit our five home games into the window provided by SMG and Doug Thornton, taking into account the construction schedule at the Superdome," said Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson. "It will be a challenge for our team to open with three straight road games, but if that means we're back in our home stadium for the last two months of the season, it will be worth the wait."
Tulane opens the 2006 season Sept. 9 at Houston in the first of three straight September road games. One week later, the Green Wave will play Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. before renewing its series with long-time in-state rival LSU on Sept. 23 in Baton Rouge. Tulane and LSU announced last summer that the teams will play a 10-game home and home series beginning in 2006. Tulane has played the Tigers more than any other team in its history.
After back-to-back home games versus SMU and Rice, the Wave will travel to UTEP Oct. 14 before facing its third Southeastern Conference opponent of the season in a game at Auburn Oct. 21. After a one-year absence, Army returns to the Tulane schedule as a non-conference foe.
Tulane will start November by making its first visit to Marshall, and then welcomes Southern Miss and UCF to New Orleans in back-to-back Saturdays to close out the home schedule. The Green Wave finish the regular season at 2005 Conference USA champion Tulsa on Nov. 18.
The Wave's 2006 schedule includes seven teams that played in bowl games last season, including Conference USA foes Tulsa, UTEP, UCF, Houston and Southern Miss as well as LSU and Auburn on the non-conference slate. Its lone open date will occur on the season's first weekend, Sept. 2, following which Tulane will play 12 straight weeks.
Details of the schedule including game times, the homecoming date and television schedules, and complete ticket information, will be announced at a later date.
