A few random comments...
The pass BC QB Matt Ryan made against Va. Tech Thursday night to give the Golden Eagles the win was as good a college football throw as I have ever seen. It reminded me of a Brett Favre-type chunk. Very Heisman-esque.
Speaking of Heisman... give it to Matt Forté and shut up. But, he won't win this year for two reasons:
1) The Melinda Doolittle Factor - (Yes, I watched American Idol for one season... rooted for the hands down, best singer in the competition only to see her voted off... I'll never watch again) this is when the most deserving person in any contest loses out to the flashier, hipper adversary. Tulane and their plight is old news. Had Forté put up these numbers in 2005, maybe even 2006... he's definitely invited to New York. Now Tulane is just a 2-6 football team with a really good running back. But you can't ignore his numbers, although most will. Voters have proven before, they want wins or hype... which brings us to...
2) Tulane - When Matt had his first 300-yard rushing game, bobble-heads and media packets should have been sent to every media outlet in America. That's how it's done. I once received a Byron Leftwich bobble head doll when he was at Marshall, he finished sixth, and I don't even vote for the award. Now it's too late. Matt might get mentioned here and there and will even get a few votes, but Tulane should have jumped all over this opportunity and they didn't. If money was a factor, that's a shame. It does take a budget to promote a player for the Heisman Trophy (remember Joey Harrington's huge ad in Times Square a few years back). Tulane's sports information department works hard but it's understaffed as much as it's underfunded. If a brand new, state-of-the-art baseball field can be built with the help of donations from alumni, than a few bucks could certainly swing to the SID's office to promote the most productive player in Tulane football history.
Joe McKnight is good. We all knew that, but as a freshman he is making some very big plays. His numbers won't be like Reggie Bush's freshman year, but remember that McKnight didn't start getting significant carries until week 6.
Sylvester Croom is a good coach... he should be able to stay in Starkville as long as he wants (if he can beat Ole Miss this season)
Saints 31, 49ers 17...er wait Saints 24, 49ers 21...or Saints 7 49ers 49... I really have no clue any more in the NFL except that the Colts and the Patriots will win... until they face each other. Think about it, no team has gone 0-16 in the NFL... so that means the Rams or the Dolphins will probably beat someone... the Rams play the Saints November 11th.
There is not a better college football analyst than Gary Danielson. Try me.
Georgia head coach Mark Richt said at the end of the first half against Florida when asked about his team ... the entire team... rushing the field after scoring first against Florida, "I told them if they didn't get a penalty for celebrating after the first score, I would be mad at them." It worked. Georgia won. So much for "act like you've been there before." I hope Chad Johnson wasn't watching.
Back to the Heisman thing... go look at Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree's numbers. I haven't received a bobble-head from Lubbock either.
Take Care and God Bless...
