NEW ORLEANS- The Devlin S-AFE (Student-Athletics for Education) Center for Leadership and Development will kick off a camp that brings Tulane student-athletes and underprivileged youth together through the National Football League's Youth Impact Program Wednesday.
Boys from the ages of nine through 12 are enrolled in an innovative program focusing on academics, life skills and athletics. The four-week summer camp takes place on the Tulane campus and is intended to make a lasting impression on both the youth campers as well as the student-athletes.
"This is a unique opportunity for these young men in that many of them have never set foot on a college campus," Lindsey Stineman, Director of the S-AFE Center said. "Prior to camp, many of the participants in the Youth Impact Program may not see college as an opportunity that could be a part of their future, but it is our goal to show them it can be a reality. Through the Youth Impact Program, these young men will see the value of education and learn steps to achieve goals that will put them on the path to a higher education and open the doors to many more opportunities in the future."
The campers will participate in various workshops such as sportsmanship and handling money, with all the events of the weeks relating to a weekly theme, including handling emotions, healthy living and making positive life choices. Various speakers will also host discussions with campers. Guest speakers include head football coach Bob Toledo, members of the Tulane training staff to discuss healthy living, in addition to members of New Orleans Police Department.
The second university in the nation to host the program, Tulane hosted 75 youths during the 2008 inaugural program, with more than 100 signed up for the 2009 installment. The Youth Impact Program was founded by former San Francisco 49er Riki Ellison, who currently serves as the chairman of the organization. The Youth Impact Program has received a Joint Congressional Resolution for its achievements and will also be taking place in Houston, Southern California and Tampa in 2009.
