NEW ORLEANS - The 11th-ranked Tulane women's golf team got back on track during Sunday's final round of the 2010 Tar Heel Invitational as the Green Wave combined for a 1-under 287 total for a seventh place finish and senior Janine Fellows concluded another great tournament and tied the school record for the lowest 54-hole total in school history with a 6-under 210 for a sixth place performance at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Fellows turned in another subpar round today with a 2-under 70 and posted a top 10 finish for the second straight tournament after chalking up a second place effort two weeks ago at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Fellows tied teammate Ashley McKenney for the lowest 54-hole total in the Tulane golf annals. McKenney first established the record less than a year ago with her 210 total en route to claiming the 2010 Conference USA individual title.
Today, Fellows began on the ninth hole during the shotgun start and stumbled out of the gates with a bogey. She then birdied the 13th, 15th and 17th holes to drop to 2-under, but the stingy 18th hole continued to give her problems and she rounded he turn with her second bogey to move up to 1-over on the day. However, she played even golf and returned to 2-under par with her fourth birdie of the afternoon on the seventh hole. Fellows completed the event with 12 birdies.
"This was another great week for Janine," Tulane head coach John Thomas Horton said. "She has continued to step up and take the lead of this team and is doing a fantastic job. We didn't have our best day yesterday, but I was happy with the way our team stepped up today and made a good comeback. Any time you can shoot under par as a team is great and we were able to leap frog up four spots and that was huge for us. I'm pleased with our effort, but we'll use our next 20 days to work hard and get ready for Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas."
Sophomore Maribel Lopez Porras recorded her best round of the tournament today with a 1-under 71 and produced a 27th place finish with a 1-over 217 for the Classic. She tapped in three birdies on the day, while suffering just two bogeys.
Senior Linn Gustafsson matched her second round total with an identical 1-over 73 today and finished 42nd with a 5-over 221 total, while McKenney carded her best round of the Classic with a 1-over 73 to finish with an 8-over 224 for 56th place.
Junior Samantha Troyanovich went to the clubhouse with her third straight round of 5-over 77 and finished with a 15-over 231 for 80th place.
