NEW ORLEANS - As the second week of the Tulane Volleyball team's fall camp gets underway, the team is starting to take shape and it is time to breakdown the roster for our fans. The first section of the squad we will focus on are the setters, a position that is very competitive entering camp and one that is the driving force of the team's offense.
This season, the Green Wave brought three setters into camp, with no clear cut starter, and all three of them have been working on their individual skill sets. Elysa Jackson redshirted last season, Mel Mandelbaum is a true freshman and Lilly Wolfe has a year of experience under her belt after transferring in from New Mexico State.
"We decided to have three setters (this season) so that we could have some more competition for that position," said head coach Sinisa Momic. "It is a very important position and we want to make sure that we have that covered. We want all three setters to improve and compete with each other. We want to have options to run a six-two or five-one system, or switch back and forth. Our setters need to be versatile."
Jackson enters camp as the only setter to have previous knowledge of the system, as she spent last season on the sidelines with the Olive and Blue watching All-American setter Rachel Lindelow. The Sugar Land, Texas native spent her final prep season, the 2008 slate, at Stephen F. Austin High School where she was named the District 23-5A Setter of the Year. She also spent two seasons at Hightower High School and earned All-District honors during each of her seasons.
Wolfe joins the Tulane program after spending one season on campus at New Mexico State. The Santa Rosa, Calif. native appeared in 22 matches last season with 52 sets played and ranked second on the team with 139 assists. She posted six double-digit assist matches, including a season-high 23 versus Louisiana Tech on October 10.
Mandelbaum joins the Green Wave program after a standout prep career at Clovis West High School in Clovis, Calif. While at CWHS, she led the state of California in assists as a senior (1,201) and earned All-American honors from PrepVolleyball.com and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Mandelbaum was a was California Interscholastic Federation Division I First Team All-Region pick as a junior and senior, while earning the CIF Central Section Player of the Year honor as a senior. She is the school record holder in career assists (3,878) and digs (917), while helping the Golden Eagles to their only two CIF Central Section titles in school history as a junior and senior.
Season ticket packages are on sale now, priced $55 for adults and $35 for youth, and can be purchased online at www.tulanegreenwave.com or by calling the Tulane Ticket Office at (504) 861-WAVE.
