NEW ORLEANS - Shadow a Student-Athlete is just another unique aspect to the Tulane athletics department and is one of the staple initiatives of the Devlin S-AFE Center. The S-AFE Center, which stands for Student-Athletes For Education, hosted nearly 70 young men and women from Arthur Ashe Charter School on the Uptown campus to give them a glimpse of what the college experience is all about.
An assortment of Green Wave student-athletes gathered at the James W. Wilson Center on Wednesday, November 9 and awaited the arrival of their mentee from AACS. Each Arthur Ashe student was paired with a Tulane student that participated in a sport of their interest. From there, the duo toured campus, going to class, visiting team facilities and accompanying them to lunch in the atrium of the Wilson Center.
"The Devlin S-AFE Center is proud to host a Shadow A Student Athlete Day each semester for a local elementary school in the New Orleans community," said Tulane Associate AD and Executive Director of the S-AFE Center Sue Bower. "The purpose of the program is to expose our city's youth to the collegiate environment while conveying a message that attending college is an attainable goal. Hosting the seventh and eighth grade children from Arthur Ashe was an amazing experience for our student-athletes."
The Shadow a Student-Athlete Day is an initiative that the Green Wave athletic department has worked with local schools on for the past few years, offering the program once a semester. If you are interest in participating in the program you can contact Sue Bower at (504) 865-5513.
