NEW ORLEANS - Conference USA announced their Spirit of Service award winners on Tuesday (December 20) and Brian Lozes, a senior on the men's cross country squad, was selected as Tulane's honoree. The award is designed to recognize the dedication and service of the conference's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
Lozes has been a mainstay on the men's cross country squad since arriving on campus and has applied that same effort to his duties in the classroom and the community. The Covington, La. native serves as the Vice President of Tulane's Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and has been the Tulane SAAC male liaison with Conference USA for the past two years. His efforts as the Co-Director of the SAAC Food Drive during the past two Fall semesters have helped Tulane raise over $5000.00 for their local food bank.
He has assisted with the last two Tulane Athletics Fan Day outings, was a major contributor to the Halloween Trick or Treat Village at Superdome in 2011 and volunteered his time with the Power Ties Initiative at Samuel J. Green Elementary. A yearly tutor for Tulane's Shadow a Student Athlete Day, Lozes has also helped with the planning and execution for Wave Days, the Martin Behrman Elementary School-Tulane University Tour and the R.K Smith Middle School Career Day.
All of his efforts in the community have not deterred Lozes from his studies. The Finance major in Tulane's A.B. Freeman School of Business carries a 3.424 GPA and has been selected to the Tulane 3.0 Club and Conference USA Commissioners Honor Roll during each of his first three years on the Uptown campus. Lozes has also earned the Tulane Student-Athlete of the Week honor twice during his career.
On the course, Lozes was one of the top competitors for the men's cross country program this year. The senior led the Green Wave in three of the team's six meets, including a 13th place showing at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede with a time of 20:29.00 over four miles. He ran a season-best 26:40.27 over eight kilometers at the Crimson Classic and finished 51st at the Conference USA Championships. He ran a season-best 35:07.50 for 10K at the NCAA South Central Regional, helping the program return to the regional meet nearly a ten year absence.
The Spirit of Service award is handed out three times during the academic calendar (Fall, Winter and Spring) and can be awarded to student-athletes during their respective competition seasons. Below are the Spirit of Service Award winners for each of the 12 conference institutions are listed below.
