NEW ORLEANS - It's been three weeks and 22 practice sessions in the making. It featured highlight-reel moments and head-scratching miscues. It saw coaches congratulating players one moment and chewing them out the next. But on Friday morning, Tulane University football team wrapped up its fifth preseason camp under head coach Bob Toledo with a 24-period practice at the Westfeldt Practice Facility.
The Green Wave donned helmets, shoulder pads and shorts in the final day of fall practice and will have one more practice prior to the start of the school year on Monday. The team will take part in "Move-In" day on Saturday, assisting Tulane students lug their personal belongings into dorm rooms, and will hold a closed practice in the Louisiana Superdome in the afternoon.
"I think it went really well," Toledo said. "We've worked hard over the last three weeks. We've worked a lot on fundamentals and techniques offensively, defensively and on special teams. The players learned an awful lot. I think the veterans showed their experience and some of the freshmen really impressed us.
"Now we'll sit down and say, `Alright, who is going to play in the games and how much are they going to play, as well as who may not play and possibly redshirt?' But overall, it went very well."
After helping out with the move-in process, the Green Wave will load up the buses for downtown New Orleans where they will have a dress rehearsal for gameday. Among the scheduled list of activities to take place in the Dome, the team will review the game-day preparation process, go over the personnel packages for different offensive, defensive and special teams packages, and run a handful of plays.
From there, the team will enjoy a day away from the field on Sunday, and in addition to going to the first day of classes on Monday, the Green Wave will turn their attention to the season-opening ballgame against Southeastern Louisiana when they take the field for practice at 2:50 p.m.
"After Saturday, we'll give them Sunday off...Monday, we'll come back and put on the pads. We'll have a pretty good practice on Monday and keep implementing the game plan. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we'll go in shells. On Thursday, we'll do just helmets and continue to game plan. Then on Friday, we'll have a walk through, take the travel squad to the hotel and get ready to play on Saturday."
Tulane formally kicks off the 2011 season on Saturday, Sept. 3, when the Green Wave play host to the Lions at 2:30 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome. Season and individual-game ticket sales are currently for sale through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office. The Ticket Office is located on the first floor of the James W. Wilson, Jr., Center on Ben Weiner Drive, and tickets can be purchased in person, over the phone at 504-861-WAVE (9283) or via the Internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
