Bowlers Place Fourth in Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational

KENNER, La. - Tulane's bowling team placed fourth with two wins in bracket play on Sunday, the final day of the2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational at the AMF All Star Lanes.
The Green Wave (8-4) entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and defeated fifth-seeded Bethune-Cookman, 4-2, in the best 4-of-7 Baker matches to gets things started. Tulane then upended UAB, 4-2, to advance to the third-place match against fourth-ranked Vanderbilt.
The Commodores proved to be better in that game and claimed a 4-0 win over the Green Wave to place third and dropping Tulane down to fourth-place, the best finish in a tournament in the four-year history of the program.
"We came out strong today and got two big wins," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "We have come a long way to be able to play for third-place. Now we just have to go back to work and improve on some things so we can continue to get better."
Tulane freshman Michelle Ng earned all-tournament honors by placing third in the individual standings with a five-game average of 215.2, including her tournament record 289 rolled in Saturday's first game.
Stephen F. Austin freshman Stephanie Schwartz earned the MVP honors with a 241.6 average. The other three all-tournament team members included SFA's Paige Kraushaar (221.4), Texas Southern's Jelesa Maryland (210.0) and Bethune-Cookman's Ivory Miles (208.4).
Third-ranked Sam Houston State claimed the title with a 4-3 win over ninth-ranked Stephen F. Austin in the championship match.
Tulane will return to the lanes on Nov. 7-9 at the Valpo Crusader Classic in Merryville, Ind.
