Oct 28, 2014 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane golf team combined for a 5-over 293 total and completed its fall slate today with a seventh place finish at the Alamo Invitational at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
Junior Silvia Garces fired a 1-over 73 during the final round and led the Green Wave from start to finish with a 15th-place effort, notching a 2-under 214 total.
Juniors Madison Opfer and Emily Penttila each finished with a pair of 5-over 221s for 37th place. Today, Penttila carded an even par round, matching her first round effort, while Opfer produced a 3-over 75 final round score.
Senior Gemma Dryburgh and sophomore Belen Goicoechea each registered a 2-over 74 during the last round. Dryburgh finished 44th with a 6-over 222 total, while Goicoechea sported a 7-over 223 total for 51st place.
"On the whole, this was a decent tournament for us," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "We played very well in the second round but today, like the first round, we left a few shots out there. Silvia played outstanding all week, finishing under par and in the top 15. I am very happy for her to end the fall on such a positive note. As a team, we have a few things we need to work on moving forward if we want to get to that next level in the spring."
LSU came away with the team title, while Arkansas was second, Auburn was third, Texas A&M was fourth and Florida State rounded out the top five squads.
Individually, Auburn's Sophia Schubert, the first round leader, came back in today's final round to claim individual medalist honors.
The Green Wave will take the next three months off from tournament play and returns to action when it opens the 2015 spring campaign at the UCF Challenge, Feb. 8-10, at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
