Tulane Golfers Finish Eighth at Windy City Collegiate Championships
Oct 7, 2014 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane golf team combined for a 17-over 305 total during today's final round of the Windy City Collegiate Championships for an eighth place finish at the Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Illinois.
Tulane junior Emily Penttila could not find the same groove that catapulted her into first place with a 7-under total through the first 36 holes. Today, she fired an 8-over 80 and led the Green Wave with a sixth place finish.
Junior Silvia Garces turned in the best round of the day for Tulane with an even-par score for a 32nd place finish, while senior Gemma Dryburgh carded a 4-over 76 in her final round and finished 58th.
Junior Madison Opfer posted a 6-over 78 on the day but managed TU's second highest finish at 23rd.
Sophomore Belen Goicoechea posted a 7-over 79.
"We did a lot of things better this week compared to our first tournament, so there were a lot of positives for us to take away from this event," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "We were able to beat some decent teams despite giving up too many strokes on the back nine as a team. We just needed to play better as a group down the stretch. Emily's finish in the top 10 in a field of this caliber is very strong and it was nice to see Silvia bounce back today."
"We are home for a couple of days and then we will head to Texas for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. We are playing some great golf but the mental lapses are costing us. We need to continue to believe in ourselves and what we are doing and play well for 54 holes," Don added.
USC took home the team title with a 3-stroke win over host Northwestern, while the Women of Troy's Annie Park claimed individual medalist honors with a 3-stroke win over Lina Aguillon of Ohio State.
The Green Wave will have a quick turnaround as the team heads to Austin, Texas for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas, Oct. 12-14, at the University of Texas Golf Club.
