Tulane Game 12
Yulman Stadium
New Orleans, La.
Saturday's game between Tulane and Temple marks just the second meeting between the two teams and the first since the inaugural Sugar Bowl back on Jan. 1, 1935 - which the Green Wave won, 20-14, at old Tulane Stadium. With the loss, Tulane is now 1-1 all-time against the Owls.
With the loss, the Green Wave conclude the 2014 season to 3-9 overall with a 2-6 mark in their first season as members of the American Athletic Conference.
With 109 yards on 16-of-33 passing against Temple, redshirt-freshman QB Tanner Lee completed the 2014 season with 1,962 passing yards and 12 touchdowns while completing 185-of-336 passes. All of those numbers stand as Green Wave records for a rookie signal caller, and Lee's marks surpass the former records set by Ryan Griffin in 2009 (141-of-222 for 1,382 yards and nine touchdowns).
With eight punts for 293 yards, junior Peter Picerelli now has 219 punts for 8,788 yards. He concludes the 2014 campaign ranking third in Tulane history in career punts (behind Chip Clark's 249 from 1990-93 and Chris Beckman's 222 from 2003-06) and punting yards (behind Clark's 9,917 and Beckman's 9,421) while sitting eighth in punting average (40.13).
Freshman WR Teddy Veal tied for the team lead in receptions with four against the Owls, and finished the 2014 season with a team-best 40 grabs. He becomes the first Green Wave rookie to lead the team in catches since Larry Route in 1983. Route finished that year with 38 grabs for 421 yards and two touchdowns and was named first-team Freshman All-American by Blue Chips.
Sophomore RB Lazedrick Thompson's 48-yard run on the Green Wave's final drive of the contest was the longest of his career. His previous career-long run was a 24-yard scamper against UConn back on Oct. 11.
The Tulane defense posted a season-best seven pass break-ups on Saturday against the Owls as redshirt-freshman CB Parry Nickerson and senior FS Sam Scofield each batted away two passes while senior DB Brandon LeBeau, junior CB Lorenzo Doss and senior NB Taurean Nixon each had one. The last time the Green Wave had at least seven pass break-ups came on Oct. 12, 2013, when they had seven against East Carolina in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Green Wave posted double-figure tackle for loss totals for the third time in 2014 with 10.0 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Tulane had a season-best 12.0 tackles for loss on Nov. 15 against Memphis and added 10.0 vs UConn on Oct. 11.
Junior CB Lorenzo Doss' interception with 3:20 to play in the third quarter was his third of the season and the 15th of his career. He moves into sole possession of second place in Tulane history in interceptions, breaking a tie with Lynaris Elpheage (14 from 2000-02) and is now three behind career leader Paul Ellis (18 from 1969-71).
Doss' pick gives Tulane 17 interceptions on the year, a number that ranks tied for eighth in school history.
Senior DE Tyler Gilbert posted a career-high 4.0 tackles for loss on Saturday against the Owls, becoming the first Tulane player to do so since Julius Warmsley had 4.0 stops behind the line of scrimmage against Tulsa on Oct. 26, 2013, in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
With five tackles (2 solo, 3 assists) on Saturday against Temple, senior FS Sam Scofield finished the 2014 season with a team-leading 94 stops (60 solo, 34 assists). It marks the second consecutive season he paced the Green Wave in tackles after tallying 104 (74 solo, 30 assists) in 2013. Scofield is the first to repeat as Tulane's tackle leader since Trent Mackey in 2010 and 2011 and the ninth to do so since the 1969 campaign.
Thirteen Tulane players extended their double-digit starting streaks on Saturday against Temple: junior SS Darion Monroe (37), junior CB Lorenzo Doss (34), senior FS Sam Scofield (25), junior LT Arturo Uzdavinis (25) and senior RT Sean Donnelly (23), sophomore LB Nico Marley (14), redshirt-sophomore OC Nathan Sheinle (14), sophomore RG Chris Taylor (14), senior DE Tyler Gilbert (12), redshirt-sophomore LG Colton Hanson (12), sophomore NT Tranzel Smart (12), junior DE Royce LaFrance (11) and redshirt-freshman Parry Nickerson (11).

Tulane's game captains for Saturday's contest against Temple were senior WR Justyn Shackleford, senior TE Matt Marfisi and senior FS Sam Scofield.
Senior DT Kenny Welcome sang the National Anthem prior to Saturday's kickoff and wowed the crowd with his vocal talents.
