Tulane Students Set to Pack Yulman Stadium
Aug 29, 2014 | Football
NEW ORLEANS - With Tulane football just eight days away from returning to campus for the first time in nearly 40 years, Tulane's student body came out in droves to pick up all 4,400 allotted tickets over the past week for the first game in Tulane's new, on-campus Yulman Stadium against Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. on Sept. 6.
Students camped out at 5 a.m. on Thursday morning in front of the James W. Wilson, Jr., Center to ensure they could become a part of history for the contest against the Yellow Jackets that will be broadcast in front of a national audience on ESPNews. By 9 a.m., the remainder of the tickets had been dished out.
"When we built (Yulman Stadium), it was imperative we had a student section that would provide opportunities for our students to come to games," said Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson. "We are so pleased with the turnout, and we expect this to be a weekly occurrence this year."
The 4,400 student tickets allotted mark the most ever since Tulane left campus after the 1974 season, coinciding with student ticket records being kept. The three previous record-setting games for student attendance were when Tulane defeated UAB on Oct. 23, 2004, at Tad Gormley Stadium, when Tulane hosted Army on Oct. 4, 2008 - also at Tad Gormley Stadium - and when the Green Wave squared off against Ole Miss on Sept. 22, 2012 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. However, student attendance levels were only around 2,500 for those contests, marking a 76% student-body increase for Yulman Stadium's first home contest.
"The passion for Green Wave football that has erupted over the last few days is nothing short of remarkable," said Morgan Wittenberg, the Undergraduate Student Government President of Tulane University. "I can't wait to step inside Yulman Stadium on Saturday - the environment is going to be absolutely electric. Students are buzzing about everything from Tailgate Village to touchdown cheers and there's no doubt in my mind that this year will bring new levels of excitement and spirit to our school. Here's to the boys being back uptown! Roll Wave!"
Student ticket pick up for the Sept. 13 game against Southeastern Louisiana will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8 at the James W. Wilson, Jr., Center.
