Football Falls in American Play at Temple, 49-10
Oct 10, 2015 | Football
PHILADELPHIA - Tulane's football team came out of the gates hot, taking a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter at Lincoln Financial Field against American Athletic Conference foe Temple, but the Green Wave did not reach pay dirt again, and fell to the Owls, 49-10 on Saturday afternoon.
Tulane's offense only mustered 110 yards and eight first downs, while Temple corralled two Green Wave miscues in the second half on the way to its fifth-straight victory of the year.
Tulane's defense picked up right where it left off from last week, as freshman safety Roderic Teamer forced a fumble on the Owls' opening drive that was recovered by senior safety Darion Monroe. Monroe's recovery was the eighth of his career, which set a new school career record. Tulane turned the turnover into a 27-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Andrew DiRocco for the first score of the contest.
Shortly before the end of the opening stanza, Temple put together a six-play, 80 yard drive that was aided by Tulane penalties before reaching the end zone on a 22-yard touchdown pass from P.J. Walker to Robby Anderson.
At the beginning of the second quarter, freshman punter Zachary Block sent a booming punt deep into Temple territory that was touched by an Owl, and was recovered by redshirt-junior Devon Breaux. Tulane marched the remaining 26 yards, capping off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass from redshirt-sophomore quarterback Tanner Lee to sophomore receiver Teddy Veal, and the Wave led 10-7.
Temple matched that score with one of its own to regain the lead on the next drive. The Owls compiled a 90-yard drive that saw running back Jahad Thomas score on a 10-yard rush. Thomas was not done in the quarter, though, as a dropped punt by the Green Wave punter allowed Temple to begin a drive at the Tulane 12-yard line. Thomas reached the end zone once again, this time on a 16-yard touchdown reception from Thomas, giving the Owls a 21-10 lead.
In the second half, the Green Wave turned the ball over twice, while Temple scored 28 unanswered points.
Lee finished the game 16-of-29 for 95 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Veal paced the team in receptions with a career-high six for 43 yards and the lone touchdown on the afternoon. On the ground, redshirt-senior Rob Kelley led the way with 36 yards on eight carries.
Defensively, junior linebacker Eric Thomas tallied eight tackles, including three stops form lost yardage and a sack and also forced a fumble.
Tulane will return to the friendly confines of Yulman Stadium for its next contest with an American Athletic Conference contest vs. Houston on Friday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m. CST. That contest will be televised on ESPNU.
