Oct 11, 2015 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane women's golf senior standout Emily Penttila will get the opportunity to represent her home country of Finland this week when she competes in the 2015 Spirit International Amateur Championships. The three-round tournament kicks off on Monday at the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
The Spirit features the world's best amateur men and women golfers as they represent their respective countries in team and individual competitions. The Spirit and Texas Golf Associations invited 20 countries, based on the men's and women's combined results from the most recent World Amateur Team Championships. Then, each invited country assembles their best available amateurs, comprised of two men and two women.
The biennial event features 54 holes of best ball competition in which five separate competitions are conducted as well: International Team, Men's Team, Women's Team, Men's Individual and Women's Individual.
"Really excited for Emily to be representing her home country of Finland and our woman's program here at Tulane University," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "She is off to a great start to her senior year and this will be another opportunity for Emily to test herself against some of the best competition in the world."
With three fall tournaments under her belt in the 2015-16 season, Penttila has averaged a 72.33 and produced a low round of 70 twice. Thus, in nine total rounds of golf, Penttila has netted seven total rounds at par or better.
Penttila and her fellow Finland teammate Matilda Castren will tee-off at 8:54 a.m. CT on Monday in the first round vs. Sweden. Be sure to follow @GreenWaveWGolf
