QUOTES FOLLOWING TULANE FOOTBALL'S 45-34 LOSS VS. TULSA
Tulsa 45, Tulane 34
Tulane Game 12
Yulman Stadium
New Orleans, La.
Tulane Head Coach Curtis Johnson:
Opening statement:
"My players gave a great effort. My hat goes off to Tulsa. Those receivers are awesome. Their coach really did a great job with them. I was proud of the way my team played. They really came out and played well, as well as they could possibly play."
On post-game emotions...
"[I was] happy with how they played, especially Jordy. I thought the seniors gave a great effort."
On what a win would've meant...
"You always want to end the season with a win, but it didn't happen. It's just unfortunate. It would've meant a lot, especially to those seniors."
On tonight being his last game...
"I don't determine those things. You guys will know as soon as everyone tells me."
On Jordy...
"If you ever wanted to write a real good story, I would do him because he stayed here for five years and never played. He almost didn't play in the spring, but I had a scholarship and I said Jordy, if you want it, you can have it. And to go out on his last game and put on this performance, 300 yards passing, he ran it well, he did so much well, but at the end it didn't work out for him. He was the one kid that my heart really went out to, at practice every day, how well he did academically, everything."
Quarterback #16 Jordy Joseph:
"It's always great to walk out in front of the Tulane fans, and get to play. Especially playing with these seniors and guys like this."
"He [CJ] said he was proud of me and the way that I played. He said I played great, and that I've got a bright future in whatever I want to do. That means a lot coming from CJ. CJ's just a guy to look up to. He always does things right."
On his last game:
"The dream would've been perfect if we had won the game. I can't ask for anything else. Just the opportunity to play the game with my teammates, and play the game I love for the last time, you can't ask for too much more than that."
On CJ:
"He just told us that he's proud of how we battled. We're just getting ready for next year and stuff. The whole big thing at the end of the game was on finishing."
Running Back #26 Dontrell Hilliard:
On how the offense played:
"I think it was a good step for the future. It does make us excited for next year. You can't ask for a better way to go out in the season, other than a win."
On CJ's future with the team:
"We just focused on the game. At the end of the day, we just focus on the things that we can control. We just wanted to go out and put on a show for our seniors and our team."
"Everything's football first. We're just here to play football and go to school."
Safety #2 Darion Monroe:
"I'm kind of hurt because we didn't win the game after being up so long. We didn't give enough at the end. It's good to see our offense preform how they did. I think we could've played better on defense, had a few more stops. I'm proud of the guys and how they fought the whole game. It's bittersweet. This is my last game in a Green Wave uniform. I's kind of tough. It didn't hit me until I was there with my parents. It's tough."
"It was my last one. I stopped and grabbed Royce [Lafrance] and [Corey] Redwine and said 'don't let this be our last game. Do what we got to do to better ourselves to get to the next level."
On the interception:
"It did feel good. I think I owe the fans that. I only have six in my career so it's good to get one to go out with. It's really nothing when you have a loss though.
On Jordy Joseph:
"Jordy played a great game. He's an awesome guy, humble. It's just how the game goes sometimes. The ball wasn't rolling our way. Those guys made some great plays on their side of the ball too. They did a great job, great coverage, great catch."
On CJ:
"He's a great coach. He did a great job here. He did a great job recruiting, keeping guys in state. There's a lot of guys on the team with bright futures. We're just very young, which is unfortunate. We have a lot of inexperienced guys playing. Being that this is his fourth year, he and the other coaches have done a great job with recruiting and getting guys to stay home."
Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery:
Opening Statement:
On his emotions after the win…
"I really can't (pinpoint them). I'm so proud of our football down. We're down and come in at halftime, we sit and talk and make some adjustments, and my message to them before we came out (for the second half) was that we're fixing to win this game. Those guys just continued to battle, continued to fight. Our defense comes up with a couple of huge plays there at the end. Offensively, what can you say about what Keyarris (Garrett) did. Josh (Atkinson) had some big catches. Those guys just continued to battle. They did a great job against our rushing attack. Those guys out there just continued to make plays."
On how his team won the game…
"We get two pick-sixes there late (in the game). (Craig) Suits' was huge, and then (Kolton) Shindelar, we get down and he just keeps running and my goodness. (It was) Just a great team win. These guys have worked so, so hard. I'm overwhelmed with the emotions that I have for them and what they've done."
On his thought process when needing a final defensive stop to win the game…
"I just kept telling our team, 'how much do you want it? How much passion can you play with right now?' The energy level has to stay completely high. They've battled all year long, that's been our M.O. We've been a blue-collar team from day one. We've had to fight every day, win or lose. Our guys fight to the bitter end, and tonight, what can you say."
On Keyarris Garrett…
"He's just an unbelievable playmaker. When you say that about him, he is probably one of the most unselfish receivers I've ever been around. He's never once complained. There have been games where he's been targeted a ton and there has been games he hasn't been targeted much. He just goes to work every day and when his number gets called he just continues to make plays. He's a special player."
