NEW ORLEANS -- The Tulane women's swimming & diving team competes in its second consecutive home meet this weekend, hosting the SMU Mustangs. This will be the first time American Conference match-up of the season for the Green Wave. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 in the Reily Center Natatorium.
The Green Wave were last in action Oct. 24, facing the Vanderbilt Commodores in their home opener at the Reily Center Natatorium. Tulane came away with the win, edging the visitors 182-111 and notching 11 first-place finishes on the day.
Tulane's newcomers contributed largely to this victory. In her collegaite debut, freshman Natalie Clausen notched top finishes in both of her events, placing first in both the 1000 free (10:17.57) and the 500 free (5:04.02). Freshmen Shelly Zelnick and Paris Zhang also continued to deliver. Zelnick took first in the 100 back (56.47) and 200 back (2:03.78), while Zhang notched another first-place finish in the 50 free (24.19). From the veterans, senior Mia Schachter claimed first in the 100 breast (1:02.69) and the 100 free (51.65), while senior Lauren Arnold led diving to a sweep of the events with first-place finishes in both the 1-meter (294.97) and 3-meter (303.45) dives. Her 1-meter score also set a new school record.
Tulane matched up with the Mustangs last year in the season-opening North Texas Relays. The Green Wave finished second behind host North Texas but defeated third-place SMU by an eight-point margin last September.
SMU is coming off back-to-back road wins last weekend, rolling over Houston 158-142 and beating Rice 152-136. The Mustangs' trip to Louisiana this week will also include a face-off with LSU on Saturday morning.
