Feb 10, 2015 | Football
New Orleans - Tulane head football coach Curtis Johnson has hired Carter Sheridan as the new wide receivers coach for the Green Wave and has promoted Jason Rollins to co-defensive coordinator and Doug Lichtenberger to linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.
"I am pleased to announce Doug Lichtenberger will be our special teams coordinator and linebackers coach, Carter Sheridan will coach our wide receivers and I have moved Jason Rollins into the co-defensive coordinator position," Johnson said. "We interviewed a lot of people and Doug was the best fit for what we do here. He's a fantastic special teams coach and at the linebacker position, he can do that also. Carter was my assistant with the Saints and I promised him a job when I came to Tulane. We are glad to have him on board with us. Jason and Lionel are a great fit. Those guys work so well together."
Sheridan, 37, will not have to travel far between his new job and his old employer. Previously, he spent 12 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, including the last six years as an offensive assistant for wide receivers. This will be the second stint on the same team for both Johnson and Sheridan. Prior to Tulane, Johnson was the wide receivers coach for the Saints and Sheridan served as Johnson's assistant from 2009-11.
A native of New Orleans, who prepped at nearby St. Augustine High School, Sheridan played defensive back for Florida A&M from 1996-98 and graduated with a degree in business administration in 2000.
Rollins, 40, the longest tenured coach on the Tulane coaching staff, recently completed his seventh season as a secondary coach for the Wave and was also the special teams coordinator. While he remains the secondary coach for the Wave, he will now join Lionel Washington as the team's co-defensive coordinators.
Lichtenberger, 40, returns to the sidelines after spending the last three years as the assistant athletic director for football operations and recruiting. Prior to his administrative role, he served in various capacities on the Green Wave coaching staff from 2007-11. He coached tight ends coach and was the recruiting coordinator from 2007-11 and was the offensive line coach in 2011. Lichtenberger oversaw special teams during the 2010 campaign and filled in as the interim special teams coach towards the end of the 2013 season.
Johnson also announced several other changes within his staff, including running backs/tight ends coach David Johnson, who will now serve as the recruiting coordinator, Byron Ellis will move into Lichtenberger's role as the director of football operations, Detrick Belvin is now the director of recruiting operations, Lindy Wertz will serve as the director of campus recruiting and Wayne Cordova will be the director of player personnel and external operations.
