BRADENTON, Fla. - The Tulane golf team combined for a 24-over 312 total during the third round of the 2015 NCAA Championships but for the third straight day the field at the national championships was unable to complete a round as darkness set in at the Concessions Golf Club with six teams remaining on the course.
Play will resume at 7:30 a.m. EST on Monday to complete the third round. Once the round is concluded, the top 15 teams will begin to the fourth and final round of stroke play at 10:50 a.m. EST.
Tulane entered the day needing a top 15 finish on Sunday to advance to Monday's final round of stroke play. The Green Wave started on the 10th hole and began the round with solid play, but a 10-over score on its front nine and a 14-over total on the back proved to be too high to get Tulane into the final day as a team.
With Tulane out of the hunt for a spot among the top 15 teams, the Green Wave will be represented on the last day by junior Silvia Garces and possibly by senior Gemma Dryburgh. The top nine individuals on non-advancing teams will play for an individual title. Garces is currently tied for 11th place while Dryburgh is 30th. Dryburgh's fate will be decided early Monday morning with the conclusion of the third round.
Garces was the low individual for the Green Wave for the third straight day with a 1-over 73. She played the front nine at 2-over and then scrambled on the back nine with a 1-under total. She is currently 6-over through 54 holes and is just six strokes off the lead.
"We talked last night about coming out with good energy and we felt like we had a chance to move up the leaderboard," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "We got off to a nice start with a pair of birdies on the first hole and we tried to carry our momentum through the round but this is a tough course and holes 15, 16 and 17 proved to be very difficult for us and we made too many big numbers. On the front side, I thought Gemma and Silvia really battled down the stretch to give us a chance."
"Silvia has a very low-key demeanor and has handled herself very well on this golf course. She didn't have her best performance at conference but has really bounced back in a positive way two weeks ago at regionals and this week at nationals. She has worked very hard to get better and it's great to see her efforts pay off this week," Don added.
Dryburgh posted her best round of the Championship with a 2-over 74 and is 11-over through 54 holes.
Monday's final round of stroke play will be carried live on the Golf Channel from 4-7 p.m. EST.
