NEW ORLEANS -- More national news coming out of the Tulane sand volleyball program this summer, this time from rising senior Jackie Wegner. After successfully passing through two tryout camps, the Clearwater, Florida native was chosen to train and compete with the USA U23 Beach National Team over the next month in Manhattan Beach, California.
"From a program standpoint it's great that Tulane is represented on a national team," Tulane head coach Wayne Holly said. "It increases our exposure and further spreads our footprint into an area loaded with beach volleyball prospects. For Jackie, the accomplishment is a long-time coming. She has trained hard for this opportunity and had to make a lot difficult choices to see it come to fruition. It's wonderful to see our players follow their dreams. I am very proud of what she has accomplished so far."
After a successful tryout camp this past January in her hometown, Wegner, along with the other top-19 athletes in the U23 age group, were invited to participate in a second level tryout in Manhattan Beach on May 31. After impressing once more, Wegner was selected as part of the Elite 10 which then became the U23 Beach National Team.
Wegner will now train twice a week with the national squad from June 8 through July 14, all in preparation for the USA Beach High Performance Championships July 15-16 in Hermosa Beach, California.
Finally, Wegner is fresh off of her best sand volleyball season at Tulane, becoming the program's first 30-match winner with a 30-11 overall record. The soon to be senior qualified for her second straight AVCA National Pairs Championships alongside Tea Juric, who is currently competing on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.
