NEW ORLEANS - Tulane’s women’s golf team makes its much-anticipated 2015-16 debut this weekend, Saturday, Sept. 12 - Sunday, Sept. 13, when the Green Wave open Fall play in the 32nd annual Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The event is hosted by Michigan State.
The 2015 fieldincludes: Akron, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Grand Valley, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oakland, Ohio University, Toledo, Tulane and Western Michigan.
The teams will play on a par-72, 6,236-yard course and the format will feature 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes during Sunday’s final round. Both days will begin with a shotgun start, including Saturday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
The event will mark a homecoming of sorts for third-year Tulane head coach Lorne Don, who played on the men’s golf team at Michigan State from 1999-2003 and then served as an assistant coach the Spartans’ women’s golf program from 2004-2013.
“We are heading into the season opener with the expectation of winning the event,” Don said. “We have been preparing and working hard for two weeks for this tournament. Assistant coach Mandi Morrow and I are very familiar with this course so we have great insight for our team to play this course. We have a good game plan place and we are ready to compete.
“I am very excited to go back to Michigan State, where I played and coached for 14 years, for a lot of reasons but one of the main ones is introducing our team to the namesake of the tournament, Mary Fossum, who was a pioneer in women’s collegiate golf and a long-time head coach at Michigan State after starting the program.”
Just a little over three months ago, the Green Wave completed its 2014-15 campaign with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
Tulane returns fourletterwinners from last year’s squad, including the senior trio of Silvia Garces, Madison Opfer and Emily Penttila, along with junior Belen Goicoechea, and features three newcomers in Abbie Cantwell, Sofia Goicoechea and Laura Munoz.
