5 Things to Know in Tulane Athletics
Sep 7, 2015 | General
Here's this week's "5 Things to Know" in Tulane Athletics. Each Monday, throughout the year, we will post five current stories about Tulane student-athletes, sports programs, current or former student-athletes, or about the department in general. 1. Green Wave Senior Trio Ready to Begin Final Season
Tulane seniors Silvia Garces, Madison Opfer and Emily Penttila have been the backbone on the nationally recognized women's golf program during all three of their seasons with the Green Wave. The trio has led Tulane to three straight NCAA Championships, including a school-record ninth-place finish in 2013, three NCAA Regional appearances and a pair of Conference USA titles in 2013 and 2014. All three rank among the school's top five leaders for career stroke average.
Their goal for this season? Simple. Win the American Athletic Conference title, return to regional play and advance to the national championships for the fourth consecutive year.
The Green Wave will begin their season this weekend at the Mary Fossum Invitational, Sept. 12-13, at the Forest Akers West Golf Club in East Lansing, Mich.
2. Cross Country Team Notch First Wins of 2015-16 Campaign
Tulane's men's and women's cross country teams became the first Green Wave squads to notch victories this season.
Sophomore Moses Aloiloi posted an individual victory and fellow second-year standout Emma Newton tallied a runner-up finish as both Tulane University cross country teams opened the 2015 season by sweeping the field at the Jaguar Opener. It marks the second straight season both the men's and women's teams won their season opening race.

3. Volleyball Senior Amy Lanski Spends Time Behind the Camera this Summer
Senior volleyball student-athletes Amy Lanski spent her summer on campus taking classes and preparing for her final playing season with the Green Wave. When she wasn't in the classroom or in workouts, she got a jump start on life after Tulane.
Lanski began working in sports for WDSU-TV, the local NBC affiliate, in May. She gained experience covering sporting events and local professional, college and high school teams around the area, including Tulane.
"I helped with sound and shadowed the reporters, did stand ups and learned how to make packages," Lanski said. "The internship has been so helpful for me. I have been able to meet a lot of people in the field, and I have learned things I would have never learned before because of them. I want to go into sports news after I graduate, probably to a small market, or hopefully to a small conference to be able to do sideline reporting eventually."
Lanski and the Green Wave will host the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic to open the home portion of the schedule this weekend at Devlin Fieldhouse. The field for the 2015 Classic features Tulane, TCU, North Carolina State, Nicholls State and Incarnate Word.
4. Tulane Football Visits Georgia Tech for First Time Since 1980
Tulane (0-1) hits the road for the first time this season when it takes on Georgia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2:30 p.m. CST/3:34 p.m. EST.
The Wave is making its first appearance in Atlanta since the Jimmy Carter administration sat in the White House. Tulane last visited Bobby Dodd Stadium on Oct. 25, 1980, and left town with a 31-14 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
The game will be available on the ACC Regional Sports Network. Click here for Gameday Information.
5. Tulane Athletics Launches Gameday Mobile Application
Tulane announced the creation of a new social-centric mobile application, "Tulane Gameday", which will connect fans to the action while at the game or watching from home. Tulane partnered with SportsLabs to create this application which ultimately will include every sport Tulane offers.
