Thompson's career day highlights the win
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Tulane football capped the 2016 season in winning fashion with a convincing 38-13 road victory over UConn.
The Green Wave (4-8, 1-7 American Athletic Conference | West) played well in all three phases to give first-year head coach Willie Fritz his first conference win since arriving in New Orleans.
On offense, triple-option ground attack compiled 255 yards and five touchdowns. Redshirt senior running back Lazedrick Thompson ran for a career-high three scores and his backfield classmate Josh Rounds ran for two. On defense, the Wave forced and recovered two fumbles, both were recovered by senior linebacker Nico Marley, and grabbed two interceptions. On special teams, freshman linebacker Larry Bryant blocked and recovered a punt in the first quarter and redshirt junior free safety Jarrod Franklin blocked a field goal in the second quarter.
"We talked last night how this was a game of pride and how pride is something pretty important to play for," said Fritz. "I thought our guys really, really exhibited a lot of competitiveness and toughness in all three phases."
It was Bryant's block that put Tulane in business in the early going as he got a hand on the ball and recovered it on the UConn 23-yard line on the Huskies' fifth offensive play. The Green Wave converted the turnover into points with a 23-yard field goal by junior placekicker Andrew DiRocco.
Tulane took control of the game over its next four offensive possessions as three resulted in touchdowns. Rounds punched it in from one yard out and then from four yards out to put the Wave up 17-0 with just over nine minutes remaining before halftime. Teamer's interception on the Huskies' next offensive possession got the ball right back to the offense on the Wave's own 41-yard line. Eight plays later, Thompson scored the first of his three touchdowns on a three-yard run to push the advantage to 24-0 at the break.
UConn (3-9, 1-7 The American | East) got on the board in the third quarter on a 62-yard scoring run by Arkeel Newsome. The Huskies' two-point conversion failed so the score stood at 24-6.
Tulane answered with another long scoring drive, 12 plays for 75 yards, that lasted seven minutes and ended with Thompson bulldozing in from one yard out on the first play of the fourth quarter on fourth down. With the extra point, the Wave moved its lead to 31-6.
Newsome scored again for UConn, this time on a 20-yard reception, midway through the fourth quarter to make the score 31-13.
Tulane tacked on a final touchdown on its next offensive play after Franklin recovered UConn's on-side kick attempt on the Wave's own 45-yard line. It was Thompson for the hat trick, rumbling 45 yards to make the score 38-13.
Thompson closed his time wearing the Olive and Blue with career highs in carries (23), yards (108) and touchdowns (3). Marley put a stamp on his stellar career with 1.0 tackles for loss in the game to become school's all-time leader with 50.5, surpassing Kenan Blackmon's 50.0 tackles for loss from 1999-2002.
