NEW ORLEANS - Senior Emily Penttila carded a 5-under 66 today and set the
Penttila’s effort today was the second-lowest single round score in the school annals and marked the highest finish of her career. Today, she notched one birdie and was guilty of one bogey on the front nine, but she heated up with five birdies on the back nine.
Freshman Laura Munoz continued to be a bright spot for the Wave. She fired a 3-under 68 on the day for the best round of her young career and notched a 20th place finish.
Junior Belen Goicoechea was 5-over on the day and finished 32nd while seniors Madison Opfer and Silvia Garces were 49th and 64th, respectively. Freshman Abbie Cantwell played as an individual and finished 70th.
“This was a phenomenal tournament for Emily and I’m glad to see she broke a school record,” Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. “She played so well and then closed out the tournament with a 5-under effort on the back nine. I am very proud of her and all the work she has put in. She has played so well all spring and it was great to see her put it together this week. It was also great to see Laura step up and play as well as she did today with a 68.
“We talked about coming out this spring and playing at a higher level and we have done that through three tournaments. We are where we want to be at this point in the spring and we need to keep this momentum going as we head to LSU in a few weeks.”
Northwestern completed its wire-to-wire run to capture the team title, while Iowa State was second, Miami was third, Tulane was fourth and East Carolina rounded out the top five squads.
The Green Wave outdistanced four teams ranked ahead of them in the national rankings, including one Top-25 squad.
Northwestern’s Hannah Kim claimed individual medalist honors with a 14-under 199.
Tulane will take the next two weeks off before making the short trip up to Baton Rouge to participate in the 2016 LSU Tiger Golf Classic, March 20-22, at the University Club.
