Women's Tennis Wraps Up Day One at Roberta Allison Classic
Oct 27, 2017 | Women's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Despite a slightly tougher day than initially planned, the Tulane women's tennis team concluded its first day of the Roberta Allison Classic at the University of Alabama on Friday.
The original tournament schedule planned for two rounds of doubles and one singles round for day one, but due to the anticipation of weather hazards on Saturday, the Green Wave played two rounds of singles and one doubles.
Perhaps the most impressive result of the day came from Alvaro who, despite dropping her first round singles match, responded with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory over the nation's No. 91 singles player Anna Vrbenska of Ole Miss in the consolation draw. Elena Muller also bounced back with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Clemson's Ally Miller in her consolation singles matchup.
In singles, three Green Wave players won their first round matches as Sisti, Daniela La Fuente and Sofia Kurtz claimed victories via third set tiebreakers. Unfortunately, all three suffered second round defeats, but will play for third place in their respective draws on Saturday.
Two of Tulane's doubles teams earned first round victories, as Ivone Alvaro and Laura Fabrizi earned a 6-4 win over Samford, before Christina Sisti and Sade Atkinson knocked off the top seed in their draw from Clemson, 7-6. Both doubles pairs will look for consecutive wins on Saturday to claim the title in their respective draws.
