Allstate Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame Release
NEW ORLEANS – Former Tulane football All-American Claude "Monk" Simons will be part of the inaugural Allstate Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame class, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced this week.
Simons is part of a 16-member class that will be inducted into the newly established Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame during bowl week activities later this month.
Simons was the star of the inaugural Sugar Bowl Classic in 1935. The Green Wave speedster had what is still considered one of the greatest plays in Sugar Bowl history when he took a lateral and dashed 85 yards to pay dirt to jump start a stalled Tulane offense. After his playing career, Simons would go on to a prominent role with the Sugar Bowl Committee from 1949 to 1975, including serving as President for the 1959 and 1960 games.
Simons joins former college football stars such as Sammy Baugh, Tony Dorsett, Bo Jackson, Archie Manning, Dan Marino, Davey O'Brien and Herschel Walker, along with coaches Frank Broyles, Bear Bryant and Johnny Majors.
At Tulane, Simons was a first-team All-America halfback in 1934 when he led the Green Wave in rushing, passing and scoring. He returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown against LSU, and led the Wave to a 20-14 victory over Temple in the first Sugar Bowl game, played at Tulane Stadium. He returned to Tulane as head coach from 1942-45. He was inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1975, and is also a member of the Louisiana, Greater New Orleans and Tulane sports halls of fame.
