NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's golf team sits tied for 11th at +10 (298) after the first round of the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship.
Â
The Green Wave got off to a tough start at English Turn Golf & Country Club with a +8 through the first nine holes and battled on the back nine to finish the round just outside of the top 10. Miami (Fla.) tops the team leaderboard going into the second round at -1 (287), followed by Denver at +2 (290), Texas at +3 (291), Florida at +4 (292), Houston at +4 (292) and Oklahoma State at +4 (292). Top-ranked Stanford is seventh at +5 (293).
Â
Sophomore Sofia Goicoechea was the bright spot for Tulane with a -2 (70) to place tied for fourth with four others among the 90 golfers competing.
Â
"Today was a great day," said Sofia Goicoechea. "It was good to hit a low score, make some birdies and have some fun out there. The course is in great shape so it was nice to make some puts and enjoy the round."
Â
The Necochea, Argentina, native started the day with a bogey on the first hole then sank back-to-back birdies to set the tone for the remainder of her round. She holed consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes and added another birdie on 16th before closing the round with a bogey.
Â
Playing as an individual, fellow sophomore Laura Munoz posted a -1 (71) with four birdies and three bogeys. Denver's Mariell Bruun and Miami (Fla.)'s Dewi Weber are tied for the individual lead at -4 (68). Houston's Megan Thothong provide the highlight of the day with a hole-in-one on the par 3, 138-yard eighth hole.
Â
Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Tuesday, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate continues Monday morning with an adjusted schedule. The second round is set to begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT with continuous play into the final round.Â
