SMYRNA, Tenn. – Tulane bowling placed eighth at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional Qualifier this weekend at the Smyrna Bowling Center.
The Green Wave finished with 11,660 total pins, just 154 pins shy of fourth place across 64 games this weekend. The top four teams advance from the sectional qualifier to the USBC national championship tournament.
"I am disappointed in the outcome," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "We are such a talented team, but we just didn't pull it together today."
Teams competed in 64 Baker games, grouped into four blocks of four-game matches, with team standings calculated by total pinfall. On Saturday, the Green Wave posted a big second-session score of 3,167 pins – its session high for the weekend – to combine with its 2,800 from the first block to post a total of 5,967 and a third-place standing halfway through the tournament.
Sunday, Tulane posted scores of 2,799 and 2,894 for a second-day total of 5,693, falling shy of a coveted top-four spot in the standings.
On Friday, Tulane athletes competed in the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships Sectional Qualifier, in which the top six individuals earned a spot in the national championship. Freshman Isabelle Lee was Tulane's top finisher at 16th, posting a six-game pin total of 1,150, including a high score of 232 in the fifth game. Sophomore Tiera Gulum posted a 1,111 pin total, and senior Angela Falgoust posted a 1,101 pin total to place 38th and 41st, respectively.
This was the second straight year the Green Wave competed in the USBC sectional qualifier. In 2016, Tulane finished eighth in its first-ever appearance in the USBC sectional qualifier.
The Green Wave will be back in Smyrna next weekend, March 17-19, for the Music City Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt. Following that tournament, Tulane will compete for the Southland Bowling League Championship, March 25-26, in Jonesboro, Ark.
