NEW ORLEANS – Tulane bowling will compete in the 2017 Southland Bowling League Championship Friday through Sunday at Hijinx Lanes in Jonesboro, Ark. The sixth-seeded Green Wave opens the tournament against third-seeded Vanderbilt on Friday.
The SBL Championship is an eight-team, double-elimination tournament, using a best-of-three match format. The tournament will be streamed live at www.InsideBowling.com.
Each matchup between teams will be a best-of-three format. Match 1 is a five-person team match, and Match 2 is a Baker match with winner determined by total pinfall. Match 3, which will serve as the tiebreaker format if the competing teams are tied after the first two matches, is a Baker best-of-seven match play. Tournament seeding was determined by the official NCAA RPI rankings as of March 21.
On Friday, the first round of four matches will begin at 8 a.m. The second round of winner's bracket and elimination matches will begin at 1 p.m. Competition continues Saturday with two elimination matches at 8 a.m., and the first semifinal and a third elimination match at 1 p.m. The last semifinal will be played at 5 p.m. Saturday, and the championship match will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday. Tulane is seeded sixth at the SBL Championship for the third consecutive year. The Green Wave, which is ranked 14th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association poll, has collected team tournament victories this season at Jackson State, and in its home Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Classic.
The Green Wave has competed against Vanderbilt twice this season, both at the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans in December. The teams split the meetings, as Vanderbilt claimed a 1,051-999 win in traditional match play. The Wave, however, came back to defeat the Commodores in bracket Baker match play on Sunday, 925-806, on its way to the tournament title.
