Bowling Finishes Fourth at Southland League Championship
Mar 25, 2017 | Women's Bowling
JONESBORO, Ark. – Tulane bowling fought through the consolation bracket of the Southland Bowling League Championship, and ended with a program-best fourth-place finish in the conference championship, Saturday at Hijinx Lanes.
The Green Wave dropped its opening match to Vanderbilt on Friday morning in the double elimination tournament, setting their backs against the wall. Tulane, however, came back in the afternoon to defeat Valparaiso and advance to play another day. Saturday morning, the Wave topped Monmouth, but fell to Stephen F. Austin in the afternoon to end its run.
Sophomore Tiera Gulum was selected to the Southland Bowling League Championships All-Tournament Team, after leading Tulane past the first round of the elimination bracket at the SBL Championship for the first time.
"This team showed outstanding fight," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "At times we struggled, but we never gave up, and rebounded extremely well. It was nice for the seniors to leave on a great team performance, and this was a nice confidence booster to end the season."
The tournament format was a team traditional match and a Baker match tabulating total pinfall, followed by a best-of-seven Baker tiebreak match, if necessary. Each of Tulane's first three matches went to the tiebreak best-of-seven Baker match.
After dropping the traditional match against Vanderbilt, 1,039-867, to open the tournament, Tulane rebounded with a 932-838 Baker victory. In the tiebreak best-of-seven match, the Commodores pulled out a 4-1 win.
Friday afternoon, the Green Wave faced elimination after falling 882-830 in the traditional match against Valparaiso, but rebounded with a 964-885 Baker win, and a narrow 4-3 victory in the tiebreaker to stay alive.
Against Monmouth Saturday morning, the Wave got off to a great start, winning the traditional match, 924-909. The Hawks, however, forced a tiebreaker with a 940-912 Baker win, where the Green Wave prevailed, 4-2.
Saturday afternoon against Stephen F. Austin, Tulane saw its season come to an end with a narrow 897-882 Baker defeat after dropping the traditional match, 903-831.
In 2016-17, Tulane bowling won two tournaments – at Jackson State, and the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Classic at home – and reached its highest-ever national ranking at No. 13 in February.
