First signee of 2017 class
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane women's tennis interim head coach Chris Simpson added some more international flair to the roster on Monday when he announced the signing of Daniela La Fuente. The right-hander out of Bolivia becomes the first member of the 2017 class.
"Really excited to add Daniela to the squad," Simpson said. "I think she's going to make an immediate impact on our team in both singles and doubles. Very talented player that brings a lot of energy to the court and will take us to the next level."
La Fuente achieved a career high world junior ITF ranking of No. 125 and earned her first WTA point at the end of 2016.
In doubles, La Fuente most notably reached the semifinal of the 47th Banana Bowl while also winning three straight to earn a spot in the final at the Bahia Juniors Cup. In singles, the Bolivian native booked a ticket to the singles semifinal at the 2016 Chuquiago Junior Open and won a grade three event in Argentina in 2015.
Furthermore, La Fuente emerged from qualifying to advance to the Round of 16 in the singles main draw of the Don Benito tournament in Badajoz, Spain, and also reached the doubles main draw semifinal after winning two straight at the Santa Cruz Futures tournament.
