Track & Field Land 14 on LSWA All-Louisiana List

Kibet named Freshman of the Year // Applebee named Newcomer of the Year
BATON ROUGE, La. – Over the weekend, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) released its All-Louisiana Track & Field list, along with its end of the season major awards. Tulane's Raymond Kibet took home Freshman of the Year on the men's side, while Alyssa Applebee earned Newcomer of the Year on the women's.
All-together, 14 different Green Wave student-athletes picked up a total of 19 honors. The All-Louisiana team consists of the three best state times/distances from a national qualifying list, while the special awards were voted on by state track & field media relations personnel.
Kibet took home the gold medal in the 400m at the American Conference Championships, becoming the first title winner in said event for Tulane in nearly 20 years. Kibet went on to clock a time of 45.21 at NCAA Regionals, which not only set a new school record, but also qualified the freshman for his first NCAA Championships.
Applebee became the first First-Team All-American pole vaulter in school history when she recorded a program best seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships. In Eugene, Applebee cleared a school record 4.30m. The Illinois native also earned five gold medals this past spring, including one at the conference championship.
Speaking of Applebee, the Tulane women's pole vaulters swept the top-three in-state for the event with Mary Carson Pitts taking second and Rebekah Markel in third. The trio also swept the podium at the American Conference Championships.
Next, Emmanuel Rotich made a splash, earning the top-times in the state for both the 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase. Rotich was the first Tulane runner to compete in multiple events at the NCAA Championships, where he finished ninth in the steeplechase finals, marking the highest showing by an underclassman.
Lastly, Lauren Bartels also achieved two top in-state times with her 17:03.94 performance in the 5,000m at The American Championships, then her time of 35:27.49 in the 10,000m at the Penn Relays.
