Beach Volleyball's Wayne Holly Talks About Summer as Junior National Team Head Coach
Sep 12, 2017 | Women's Beach Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS --Â After wrapping up Tulane beach volleyball's winningest season in history with a 24-13 record, head coach Wayne Holly spent his summer on the sand, leading the USA Future Stars Beach National Team in California.
"It's always an honor to coach the USA Team, and it's a great privilege to be able to see and positively impact the development of the next generation of what we expect to be very great players," Holly said. "It was a real privilege to be asked to return for a fifth season in a row."
USA Volleyball, the national governing body for volleyball in the United States, is responsible for the USA National Men's and Women's Teams, the USA Olympic Teams and the USA Youth and Junior National Teams. The USA Beach Volleyball High Performance Program is the most prestigious junior beach volleyball program in the country and is recognized as one of the premier international pipeline development programs in the world.
Holly has now worked with the USA Juniors for five consecutive summers, getting an opportunity to train and develop younger athletes, as well as improve his coaching, while his Tulane squad is in the offseason.
"Any coach, including myself, has a lot to learn from the experience," Holly said. "It's a young team, so we have a great opportunity to learn how to develop players, and it's an opportunity as a coach to return to how to teach the fundamentals of the game. It's a great opportunity for us coaches to grow."
Holly worked with the team throughout its summer training, which culminated with a week-long national team camp at Hermosa Beach, Calif., from July 23-30. The camp was followed by the USA Junior Beach Championships, July 31-August 2, in which Holly's squads took home gold, silver and bronze medals.
