STANFORD, Calif. – No. 18 Tulane beach volleyball earned a hard-fought 3-2 win against Arizona State to conclude the Stanford Invitational Saturday. The Green Wave fell 5-0 to Cal in the morning before rebounding with the win in the afternoon, finishing the weekend with a 3-2 record and improving to 5-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal 5, #18 Tulane 0
Cal punished Tulane early and often in the first dual of day two, dropping only one set across the five flights.
Tulane's No. 1 pair senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh lost their first flight of the young season, falling in straight sets (21-12, 21-15) against Cal's top duo.
The Green Wave's No. 4 duo of junior Anna Chin and freshman Lauren Orlich, playing with each other for the first time this season, picked up the only set win of the dual. The pair won the first set, 21-18, before dropping the second and third by a score of 21-17 and 15-7, respectively.
#18 Tulane 3, Arizona State 2
Tulane responded to its defeat in a big way, closing out the weekend with a 3-2 dual win over Arizona State. The Green Wave has now defeated Arizona State twice this season, previously sweeping the Sun Devils one weekend ago at Fight in the Fort in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mertz and McHugh got back on track, winning in straight sets (21-18, 21-6) against Arizona State's top pair. Freshmen Rio Frohoff and Ashley Delgado, playing out of the two spot, dominated their opponents en route to a 21-8, 21-8 win.
Senior Lan Nguyen and sophomore Tarin Mergener also won in straight sets, knocking off Arizona State's No. 3 duo by a score of 22-20, 30-28.
UP NEXT
The Green Wave head to Birmingham, Alabama, next weekend to compete in the Blazer Beach Duals. Tulane faces Mercer and Austin Peay Friday before playing ULM and host and conference foe UAB Saturday.
