CCSAÂ Official Release
NEW ORLEANS - Senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh were named to the 2018 CCSA Beach Volleyball All-Conference Team in a unanimous selection, the league office announced Thursday afternoon. Freshman Addison Hermstad earned a spot on the conference's All-Freshman Team, as well.
"Maddy and Q have really set the tone for us this year," head coach Wayne Holly said. "They're a team that has developed consistently over the course of the year and a team we can rely on to win us a point at the one. They've really hit their stride in the second half of the season, and they've played in a way that's really put the country on notice. They've drawn the national attention they deserve by being able to compete so successfully against so many of the country's top pairs."
Mertz and McHugh played as Tulane's No. 1 in the regular season, posting a 27-6 record with 10 victories against ranked opponents. The Green Wave's top duo, who earned the conference's Pair of the Week honors once during the regular season, have dominated for much of the year, with 22 of their 27 flight wins coming in straight sets.
Â
Hermstad posted a record of 16-8 in the regular season, including five wins against ranked opponents. She played at the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions throughout the season, with 10 of her wins coming at the four spot.
Â
"She had some adversity at the start of the season, yet she's going out and giving us everything she has," Holly said. "She's still relatively new to the game and doesn't have some of the experience that others do, but she competes hard and loves playing. I think the combination of loving the game and working hard are really the things that make her such an outstanding performer."
Mertz, McHugh, Hermstad and the rest of the Green Wave will gear up for this weekend's CCSA Championship in Emerson, Georgia, with the postseason award announcements behind them. No. 19/15 Tulane starts the tournament off against No. 9 South Carolina at 11 a.m. Friday.
