Dublin, Banks Perfecting Snap in Final Week of Camp

METAIRIE – The quarterback-center exchange is one of the most crucial and most overlooked plays in football. Get it right, and no one notices. Make a mistake, and it's all anyone talks about.
Offensive lineman Corey Dublin play guard all of last season, but he'll be moving to center this year. Following Thursday morning's practice at the New Orleans Saints Training Facility, Tulane football coach Willie Fritz expressed great confidence in Dublin snapping the ball to Jonathan Banks this year.
"Corey Dublin has done a super job transition from guard to center," Fritz said. "He's a very accurate snapper which is so important. He's got that tough-guy attitude you want to have out of your offensive lineman."
Now in his second year as Tulane's quarterback, Jonathan Banks has more confidence than ever when he gets the ball snapped to him. Fritz said Banks has done a tremendous job embracing the team's triple option and learning the run-pass option (RPO) plays as well.
"The thing that Jonathan's done is he understands our offense inside and out," Fritz said. "A year ago he was learning, and plus as coaches we were learning what he's best at."
Fritz also commented on freshman nose tackle Jeffery Johnson following Thursday's practice. Johnson came to Tulane in the spring, beginning his freshman year early. That combined with his natural size and talent has been a big boost to his adjustment to the Green Wave.
"He's a hard-working young man, he's got a great attitude and he's got the mass you're looking for," Fritz said of Johnson. "He's about 320, 325 pounds, but he moves well."
The speed of the college game took a bit of an adjustment from Johnson when he joined Tulane in the spring. But after plenty of reps, Johnson is more prepared than ever.
"I knew college ball was fast, but it's just different coming straight out of high school and playing college football at that speed," Johnson said. "I think I've come a long way actually because through the spring it was kind of tough for me to adjust then. Going through the fall it kind of got better and things started improving for me."
Though he's just a true freshman, the Mississippi native will likely contribute early in his career. Sure, there are some butterflies in his stomach. But there's plenty of excitement, too.
"I'm pumped," Johnson said. "It's an adrenaline rush right now. There's some nervousness behind it, but I'm more excited than I am nervous."
