Tulane Football Teams with the United Way of Southeast Louisiana
Nov 15, 2019 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University football head coach Willie Fritz announced on Thursday a financial contribution to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana's Trauma-Informed Schools Collaborative.
Fritz's announced the gift to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana in honor of the New Orleans Saints following the team's practice at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Green Wave has held a pair of practices inside the venue this week as they prepare for their matchup at Temple on Saturday at 11 a.m.
"We are so fortunate to have the support of Mrs. Benson, the New Orleans Saints Organization, Mr. Doug Thornton and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome staff," Fritz said. "As an appreciation to each of their efforts, we would like to make a donation to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana on behalf of Green Wave football. We can't thank you enough for allowing us to use your outstanding facilities. We also would like to thank the United Way of Southeast Louisiana for all that you do for the greater New Orleans area. Who Dat and Roll Wave."
Fritz's gift to the Trauma-Informed Schools will support two of the collaborative's schools in the Central City district of New Orleans. The Central City area of New Orleans serves as the connecting neighborhood between Uptown and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The initiative addresses exposure to trauma among school-aged youth – either from traumatic experiences in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina or from chronic and persistent exposure to community violence.
"We're grateful for both Coach Fritz's commitment to New Orleans and our long-standing partnerships with Tulane University and the Saints," said Michael Williamson, UWSELA president and CEO. "His gift to United Way will ensure many of our community's most vulnerable youth have a chance at a better, brighter future."
Since 1967, Tulane and the Saints have shared a special bond, as New Orleans' college and professional football teams. The Saints are no strangers to the Uptown area of New Orleans, as the team called Tulane Stadium their home from 1967-74 before moving into the Superdome in 1975.
Earlier this year, the Saints held their annual Black and Gold practice inside Yulman Stadium in front over 12,000 fans.
