DALLAS – The No. 12 Tulane bowling team wrapped up its 2019 season at USA Bowl on Saturday, dropping the team's second-round Southland Conference Championship match to No. 6 Stephen F. Austin.
"Overall, it was a solid performance by the team," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "It was nice to see them fight to the very end and have competitive matches. Although we had the potential to make it further, it just didn't quite happen for us today."
The Green Wave came out fighting in their redemption game against the Ladyjacks, staying within a few points of their opponent in the traditional match before ultimately falling to SFA, 941 to 968.
Freshman Crystal Singh led the Olive and Blue with an impressive 215 total pinfall in the match, followed closely by senior Tiera Gulum – who currently sits at fourth in the overall tournament standings – with 211. Sophomore Madison McCall was next in line for the Green Wave, with a final count of 183.
Tulane kept its momentum high heading into the five baker matches, starting off with a 52-point deficit after the first game and quickly improving to close the score gap by 21 after three games. The Wave were just short of pulling off the comeback, eventually dropping the final competition to SFA with a 952 (169, 169, 184, 235, 195) to 1,012 (221, 161, 171, 256, 203) mark.
The team finished its season with seven top-ten finishes in nine competitive tournaments, recording a notable third-place standing among 17 teams at the Hawk Classic in November.
Bowling in their last-ever match for the Green Wave on Saturday, seniors Tiera Gulum and Hailee Hammond celebrated their time at Tulane following the team's final game this weekend. The two both shined this season in the Sunshine State Winter Classic, as Gulum became the first player in Tulane history to bowl a perfect 300 score and Hammond recorded a new career-high 257 game in the weekend tournament.
"Thank you to our seniors, Hailee and Tiera, for giving it their best shot one last time and for making an everlasting impact on this team. Their fighting spirit will certainly be missed," Veitch added.
