Markel Named American Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – The conference leader in the pole vault, Rebekah Markel was named The American Athletic Conference's Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Markel, the school record holder indoors, set a new outdoor personal best on Friday at the Texas Relays by clearing 4.21 meters (13-9.75) to place fifth at the highly competitive meet. Markel's height cleared is the best in the league so far this season by .15 meters (approximately six inches).
Her clearance of 4.21 meters is currently fourth in the NCAA East Region and 15th in the nation this season.
The indoor league champion, Markel is the first Tulane student-athlete to win The American's Outdoor Athlete of the Week honors since Jessica Duckett earned the honor on April 24, 2018. Markel is the first pole vaulter to win since Alyssa Applebee on May 2, 2017.
This is the second Athlete of the Week honor for Markel in her career, as she was the indoor athlete of the week on February 12.
The Green Wave track and field team is off this weekend but will be competing next weekend in Lafayette at the Conference Challenge.
