Silas Kiptanui Qualifies for Steeplechase Final

EUGENE, Ore. – Tulane sophomore Silas Kiptanui will compete for a national championship in just under 48 hours after he qualified tonight for the finals of the 3,000m steeplechase in the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. With a time of 8:26.74, Kiptanui won his heat Wednesday night at Hayward Field to advance to Friday's finals.
Tonight's competition was split into a pair of 12-man heats. Kiptanui competed in the first of the two semifinal races, delivering his time of 8:26.74 to best his heat and automatically advance to Friday's championship race. Upon the conclusion of the second heat, Kiptanui's time checks in at eighth on the overall leaderboard.
It will all come down to Friday night's final, which is scheduled for 7:24 p.m. CT. Kiptanui will take to the track as one of 12 finalists vying for the ultimate prize – a national championship. The race will air on ESPN2 as part of the network's coverage of this week's outdoor championships.
