James Looks to Make an Impact in 2019

NEW ORLEANS – Jamiran James came into practice last fall ready to contribute, but a late hand injury in fall camp prevented him from seeing the field for the Green Wave during the 2018 season.
Now healthy and entering his second year with the Green Wave, the New Orleans native and defensive lineman chooses to look at last year's injury in a positive light.
"It was frustrating, but you've got to look on the bright side of it and [see it] as a chance to improve every day and get better as a team and get closer as a unit," James said following Tulane's spring practice Thursday at the Saints Practice Facility. "I really got familiar with the blocks and the schemes that we're going to do. I looked at it kind of as a blessing."
A nose tackle out of De La Salle High School, James was named First Team All-State by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association and the Louisiana Football Coaches Association while in high school.
What he loves bringing to the table for the Green Wave is his physicality, listing that as his best asset. Playing in the middle of the defensive line, he'll have plenty of opportunity to be physical standing over the center at every snap.
"I love being physical and I love bringing physical play to the team," James said. "I'm a physical player and it's a real physical position. … I really think that it brings out my best contribution."
With his hand all healed, James should be a player to watch in 2019 on the Green Wave's deep defensive line.
Thursday's practice was moved to the Saints facility in Metairie to avoid thunderstorms. Coach Willie Fritz said special teams work got plenty of attention as Tulane worked on its punt blocking, punt and kickoff returns and field goals.
When the team practices on Saturday, special teams could again be featured along with red zone, passing work and open-field drills.
Tulane's spring practice continues Saturday and concludes April 13 with the annual spring game at Yulman Stadium.
Tulane opens the 2019 season on Thursday, August 29 at home against FIU with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
