How NOLA Built Me - By Kayla Manuirirangi
Jan 10, 2020 | General, Women's Basketball
When I first arrived at Tulane, I was shy, scared and homesick. But after four years in New Orleans, it has become a second home to me.
Â
I was lucky enough to travel a lot as a kid -- living on a farm in New Zealand, then in Las Vegas, then in Hawaii and then back home to New Zealand. I met a lot of different people growing up and experienced multiple cultures, but it wasn't until coming to New Orleans that I realized how truly unique this city is. A place where complete strangers ask how you are; where Mardi Gras beads sit in oak trees scattered around the city; where there is the best (unhealthiest) food in the world, and where the city spirit celebrates life. New Orleans is a place I have come to love.
Â
This city has expanded my horizons. It has introduced me to people from all walks of life, given me lifelong friends and been a place where I gave my life to Christ. Involvement with Athletes in Action has been a huge part of my life since being here. It has provided a community where I can grow in my faith and learn what it looks like to glorify God through sport. My teammates have been my sisters. They are family and the love I have for all of them can't be explained. The incredible people I've met and experiences I've had are priceless. New Orleans is a place where I have grown.
Â
The coaching staff and the chemistry of the team pulled me in from day one. I wanted to be a part of the special environment that Tulane and New Orleans offered right away. This place provided me with an opportunity to chase my dreams as an athlete and a student. The high-level education and great basketball program, along with the fun and vibrant city of New Orleans, were too much to pass up.
Â
The meaning of "student-athlete" here at Tulane University goes far beyond the court or the classroom. It requires many humbling experiences and a change in perspective to truly appreciate the platform that we have as college athletes. Regardless of whether we play for one minute or a for full game, our actions and how we conduct ourselves still impact others. My dream is to go back to my home country and create a pathway for Kiwi kids to get to college and help them be more equipped for college than I was. I would like to get a master's degree in Maori Health and help improve the health disparity between Maori and Europeans in New Zealand. The things I have learned earning my degree in Public Health have been invaluable in this endeavor.
Â
New Orleans will be my home no matter where I end up in this world. The people, the food, the music and the culture will always bring me back.
Â
My four years here have been like the streets of New Orleans: there have been a few bumps, but the scenery is spectacular. When I see an oak tree, I see beads, I hear the second line and I think of the wonderful memories this city has given me.
Â
My name is Kayla Manuirirangi and I am #NOLABuilt.
