Wright Named to the 2020 Ray Guy Award Watch List

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University football junior punter Ryan Wright was named to the 2020 Ray Guy Award Watch List.
Wright has starred this season for the Green Wave on special teams. He currently ranks second in the nation and first in the American Athletic Conference in punting average at 47.1 yards.
The San Ramon, California, native has been able to flip the field for the Olive and Blue in six games, as he has has logged four punts over 60 yards and hit a season-best 65-yard punt against SMU. Wright has pinned the opponents inside the 20 four times, inside the 10 two times and inside the five two times this season.
The Ray Guy Award - named for football's premier punter - honors the nation's best collegiate punter. The Augusta Sports Council (ASC) created the award in 2000. Along with other awards such as the Heisman Trophy and the Doak Walker Award, the Ray Guy Award honors an important member of any football team. The ASC presents the award live on The Home Depot College Football Awards broadcast on ESPN from Atlanta, Georgia.
The Ray Guy Award winner is selected by a voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners. Punters are evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis is placed on the following statistics; net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.
The Green Wave will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 7, at ECU in Greenville, N.C. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
