First and 10 with Phat Watts
Apr 7, 2020 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University welcomed seven early enrollee newcomers this spring that began classes and are working hard to make their mark on the Green Wave football program.
Throughout the spring, TulaneGreenWave.com will introduce each player through a 10-question series called First and 10.
Name: Phat Watts
Position:Wide Receiver
Hometown:Richton, Miss.
Previous School: Jones College
What initially made you want to come to Tulane?
"Really Coach Hall. I knew Coach Hall since high school. Stephon [Huderson] plays here, I played high school ball with him. Cam Carroll goes here, we played against each other in high school, and my teammate from junior college, Nick Anderson, he's here. My brother and I just thought it was the best spot for us. It's perfect."
What are you looking forward to most about your first season on the team?
"Really just being able to make more plays. I am also looking for a bigger atmosphere against bigger teams, so I'm just ready for that."
Tulane's had a great few years winning back-to-back bowl games for the first time in school history -- what are you looking forward to most about playing on a team that has so much momentum right now?
"I just feel like the only way is up right now. Like Coach [Fritz] said, we're going from good to great, so I feel like the sky's the limit for this team. We're going to be really good this year so I'm excited."
What are you most excited about to live in New Orleans?
"It was cool having my first Mardi Gras here, I'm going to be busy with football but I'm excited to see the city when I can."
What's your favorite part about the city so far?
"Beignets. I love them. There's so many food options here and everything is good."
How does it feel to be back on the field with your old teammates?
"Nick [Anderson] and I were on different sides of the ball so we always competed, and in high school I played behind Stephon [Huderson], so he was always teaching me more things. Now, we're all together as a unit. With Nick, it's a competition every day and with Stephon I have someone to guide me and help me get where I want to be."
Tell me about your relationship with your brother, Deuce, and what it's like to play with him.
"It's really weird, I can't even describe it, because it's like we're the same person on the field. Off, we're completely different. He's real quiet and I'm talking and laughing all the time, but on the field, we always find each other and make eye contact. It's weird. I feel like we have it [twin telepathy], because we look at each other every time something happens and are thinking the same thing."
How has it been so far this spring playing under Coach Fritz?
"Discipline is his main thing and working hard. You just have to do the right things and listen to him. It's faster, it's more tempo, but he does a real good job of keeping everybody working hard to their full potential."
What does it mean to you to have the opportunity to earn your degree from a school like Tulane?
"It's a once in a lifetime experience. Not many people have that opportunity, so I'm just trying to take advantage of it."
If you didn't play football, what sport would you play?
"Baseball. No question."
What NFL player do you model your game after?
"It depends. I used to play quarterback and running back. When I was a quarterback, it would be more of a Lamar Jackson type of player, when I was a running back, it would be more of an Alvin Kamara. Receiver wise, I don't know, I like Julio Jones or Michael Thomas."
