Apr 9, 2020 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University welcomed seven early enrollee newcomers this spring that began classes and are working hard to make their mark on the Green Wave football program.
Throughout the spring, TulaneGreenWave.com will introduce each player through a 10-question series called First and 10.
Name: Deuce Watts
Position: Wide Receiver
Hometown: Richton, Miss.
Previous School: Jones College
What made you decide to come to Tulane?
"Tulane was really the only team that offered to recruit me and my brother together—and that showed me they value family relationships which played a big part in it."
What are you planning on studying?
"Kinesiology, which is basically the study of the health and wellness of the body. I want to study this because I love to work out and I like nutrition."
What is your favorite part about New Orleans so far?
"The food and then also the people. The people are really nice out here. It's great to meet new people from different places."
When and why did you start playing football?
"I started playing football when I was around seven. My brother started playing first and I did not want play because I was scared, but when I was watching him I decided it looked fun so I hopped in it myself."
What is your favorite memory from playing football?
"My senior year of high school at Petal, one game was going into halftime and we threw a Hail Mary and they were about fifteen people around me, but I came down with it."
What is it like playing football with your brother?
"We are twins and have been together our whole lives so we just have a special connection. We play better when we have each other on the field."
Do you think that you and your brother have twin connection?
"We do. It is fun playing with him. Not many people get that blessing, I am just thankful for that."
If you did not play football, what other sport would you play?
"Probably baseball. I used to love baseball when I was younger. I was really good at hitting, I never really struck out. One year I got a medal for no strike outs the entire season."
Who is your biggest role model?
"Kobe Bryant. I have idolized him since I was a kid. He was my favorite athlete. When he passed away, it really hurt me. He just had a drive that no one would be better than him. He was always working hard. He would get there three hours before everyone else before practice to put in work. I follow him and I do the same thing putting in the extra work in order to be the best. That's what I want to do."
What is the best advice you would give to someone who wants to be a college athlete?
"You have to love it. You have to wake up every morning, workout, go to class and be a successful student athlete. If you want to do it, you have to do it. You have to be dedicated to it and put your all into it. You cannot just go into it halfway. You get in what you put out. That means if you work hard, you are going to win. That is my philosophy."
