Kyle Meyers Returning to the Roots
Aug 7, 2020 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Kyle Meyers always had Tulane on his mind. Not just because Tulane was in New Orleans where he grew up and played high school football, but mainly because of the Green Wave's reputation of putting defensive backs in the NFL.
Â
Since 2015, Tulane has been one of only five programs to have five cornerbacks drafted. A fact not lost upon Meyers.
Â
"I definitely had Tulane on the radar, and I was watching back home," Meyers said after fall camp Friday. "I also saw a couple guys got drafted and doing pretty well. I thought it would be a great fit. The coaches here, Coach Fritz and Coach J.J. [McCleskey], pulled me in and told me everything and now I am looking forward to the season."
Â
Meyers went to Florida State in 2016 as a four-star cornerback and a top 25 cornerback in the nation out of Holy Cross in New Orleans. He played well during his career with the Seminoles. Meyers tallied 76 tackles, seven pass breakups, five tackles for loss, three interceptions, two sacks and one forced fumble, while starting 10 games.
Â
Meyers graduated from Florida State in 2019 and is ready to bring his talent back to New Orleans.
Â
"First of all, I want to win, and I want to help this program get from Good2Great," Meyers said following fall camp Friday. "I have a lot of experience, so it is going to be a pretty great season. I am looking forward to it."
Â
Head coach Willie Fritz is excited about Meyers' return.
Â
"Well the great thing about Kyle is he's got a bunch of experience," Fritz said. "He started 10 games at Florida State. He is a taller, longer guy too. In this league, there are a bunch of tall wide receivers, so that is going to help us tremendously. He is also a very experienced kicking game player. He has covered punts and he has covered kicks. He is just a very savvy football player. We are pumped about getting him. He did a good job of graduating, we had to wait for that. I know his mom is excited about him being back in town and so are we."
Â
In his last full season with the Seminoles, Meyers played in all 12 of Florida State's games and made eight starts. He set career-highs in tackles (29), tackles for loss (4.0), sacks (2.0), pass breakups (four) and forced fumbles (one) during the 2018 season.
Â
Meyers never thought he would be back in New Orleans playing in a green jersey, but he is ready for the challenge.
Â
"I never thought I would be wearing green, but I am thankful I am here now," Meyers said. "The way life is set up, you never know what is going to come. I am just thankful I am here, and I am so excited to be here and I am ready for the season."
Â
The Green Wave will kickoff its 2020 season on Thursday, September 3, against Southeastern Louisiana inside Yulman Stadium.
