First and 10 with Lance Robinson
Mar 17, 2021 | Football
NEW ORLEANS - With Green Wave Spring Football underway, TulaneGreenWave.com will check in by profiling some of the team's newest members. Today TulaneGreenWave.com sits down with defensive back Lance Robinson, who joined the team over the offseason after he played three seasons at Kansas State University.
Q: What has spring football been life for you so far?
A: "It's been great. The guys have really embraced me since my arrival. In High school, Coach J.J. (McCleskey) had coached me for 7 on 7, so I had a previous relationship with him. Coach (Chris) Hampton recruited me coming out of high school and Coach (Willie) Fritz came to my house when I was in the process of picking a school, so I knew all of these guys when I was leaving Manhattan, Kansas, so it's been a great transition. I'm from New Orleans, so it's not a big change."
Q: With you being from New Orleans, is it extra special to come home and play for your home city?
A: "Yea, 100 percent, I'm going to have a lot of people at the games when the COVID restrictions go away. It's a lot more pressure on me because I have a lot more eyes on me. I try to be as perfect as I can, but I have to do well for my city."
Q: Cornerbacks here at Tulane have really had a lot of success going on and playing at the professional level, did that play a factor in your decision to come to Tulane?
A: "It did 100 percent. I know it's a proven fact over the last few years that Tulane has been putting DBs in the league. I want to be that next guy."
Q: How comfortable do you feel around your new teammates?
A: "I feel good. A couple of the guys, Angelo (Anderson) went to Curtis and I went to De La Salle, so I know him from previous schools. (Macon) Clark her went to Destrehan, so I knew him already. Jha'Quan (Jackson) and I played in 7-on-7 games, so I knew him as well. It has been a smooth transition."
Q: Take me back to that moment where you kind of told some of these guys, hey guys I'm coming to Tulane, I'm going to be on your team. What was that interaction like? Was that via text, dm how did that all work out? What was kind of the feeling among the guys when you told them?
A: "The first guy I texted was Jha'Quan (Jackson) because I played with him previously. I told him that, 'I'm thinking about coming here with you,' and I just told him that it's going to be a great fit. When I announced it on Twitter, Angelo (Anderson) sent me a text and so did Nick Anderson, so it's been a lot of fun to see these guys embrace me in the early going."
Q: Prior to coming to Tulane, what were your impressions about Tulane Football?
A: "I know Coach Fritz got a wonderful culture. I've known him since high school and what's not to like about Coach Fritz. He is a wonderful guy, he's a people person. The culture here is great, really. I feel right at home."
Q: Three bowl appearances for this program in the last three years, that's never been done before. Where can the team go this year?
A: "Coach Fitz has been building a winning culture, so I feel like I can help with a lot of those aspects. I think it's going to get turned around with the guys we have got. We have a good core of receivers and a good quarterback in Michael Pratt - he's a dude. I feel like we got a lot of dudes that we can make it happen we just have to finish, and that's been a big emphasis on us in the spring - finish."
Q: How do you approach your day-to-day activities on the field?
A: "I take it very seriously. When I'm out there, its work. I try to compete. If you are giving me the best work every day, it's going to be easy on Saturday. I come to it with a real business-like mentality and coming from Kansas State, it was real business like. They drilled that into me and I came here with the same mindset."
Q: Looking ahead Tulane opens up the 2021 season with a Big 12 opponent. What's it going to be like for you to see Oklahoma, a familiar foe that you've played against?
A: "I just can't wait. I haven't played football in a while and towards the end of the season last year at Kansas State. Our game against Oklahoma is going to be a great atmosphere."
Q: What's it going to mean to get back out on the field?
A: "It's going to be lovely. With the COVID-19 Pandemic, it gives you a new appreciation of what the game means. When I go out there, I'm going to try and make plays, fly around, be intense, communicate with the guys and get a win."
