Men’s Tennis Falls to SMU in AAC Championship Quarterfinal
Apr 22, 2021 | Men's Tennis
LAKE NONA, Fla. – The No. 2 seed Tulane University men's tennis team suffered a 4-1 setback to No. 7 seed SMU in the quarterfinals of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
The battle for the doubles point was furious from the start, as the Green Wave (14-7) bounced back from a 4-1 deficit on court one to drawn even, 5-5. However, the Mustangs (17-13) collected a 6-4 win on court two and rallied for a 7-5 victory on court three to clinch and take a 1-0 advantage into singles.
Tulane struggled to compile momentum early in singles, as SMU won the first set on four courts. The Mustangs pulled ahead 2-0 with a straight-set win on court six, but freshman Rafael de Alba cut that margin in half by getting the Wave on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Wilson Clarke on court five.
SMU notched its third point with a three-set victory on court three, before holding on for a second win in three frames on court one to clinch.
Ranked 19th nationally, Tulane awaits announcement for its fifth straight NCAA Tournament selection. Selections for the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship will be announced at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 3 via web stream on NCAA.com.
