Under The Helmet with Jha’Quan Jackson
Sep 25, 2021 | Football
As Tulane gets set to take on UAB in week three of the college football season, TulaneGreenWave.com sits down to chat with Jha'Quan Jackson as he gets ready to take on the Blazers on Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT).
What has this year has been like for you, and how you've been able to make your way through it?
"This year has been kind of rough going from COVID to the hurricane that just hit but, what I was told growing up is that adversity will strike and it all depends on how you come back from it."
You're a guy that comes from a pretty big family. What was it like growing up with seven siblings?
"It was great but, most of the time, I stayed with my great grandma and my mom's mom, so, I really wasn't around them as much growing up. From time to time, I got to see them and play with them when I got the chance, but football always came up a school, so I was busy a lot but now that I have a more flexible schedule, I can see them whenever I want."
What's the best thing about going to school at Tulane University?
"I would say the education. My old offensive coordinator - coach Lester - always used to emphasize to me that Tulane was a great school. He always told me that Tulane was a great school and that I wouldn't regret going Tulane."
What of what are your thoughts on the new academic center and some of the other facility upgrades that have been made just since you got here?
"It's wonderful. Just to see the change from now to then has been big."
What's the mindset you bring to the field every day knowing that you're going up against a tough opponent each and every day?
"The first thing that comes to my mind is to never, never doubt your opponent. Each and every week we have a great opponent that we will be playing, so no matter who it is, you can't doubt your opponent."
What's it like playing for offensive coordinator Chip Long?
"He's a great coach that is always hard on you. He loves each and every one of us and he's always trying to make you better. He always tells us to come with the grit every day. He tells us to fight each and every day even though it's going to be hard work. His favorite line is, it's going to be hard each and every day, but if he had an easier way to show us how to practice, he would give it to us, but there's no easy way to practice."
How would you describe your experience at Tulane?
"Fantastic. Just playing behind Darnell Mooney and Jalen McCleskey and just being in a stands three years ago, watching Teddy (Terren) Encalade and just seeing all the great things he did on the field has been an fantastic experience."
You're a stylish guy, who likes to look good. If you had your favorite pick, or jerseys and uniforms. What would that combo the helmets, jerseys, pants shoes, what do we wear?
"It's crazy you're asking this question because just before practice finished up, Devin (Charles-Hubbard) and I were just talking about what jerseys we're going to wear this weekend. To be honest, I really don't know what our favorite combination would be. We have so many varieties we could wear and it doesn't matter what we put on, we're going to look good. I don't really have a favorite because all of them are nice."
If you were to be on a deserted island with one person on this team, who would that be?
"I'd say Tyjae Spears. We just have a friendship that we have built since freshman year to know. He's like my brother from another mother."
If you were to rely on somebody to come get you after your car breaks down Who are you calling?
"Coach Conway, he coming to get me ASAP."
