No. 17 Bowling Returns Home to Host the Colonial Lanes Classic This Weekend

New Orleans – After a successful start to the season, the No. 17 ranked Tulane University bowling team is set to return home and play host to the Colonial Lanes Classic this Friday starting at 9:45 a.m. at Colonial Lanes in Harahan.
The first day of competition will be five (5) five-game baker matches with total pins being the goal. In the lane pairings, Tulane will start match one in lanes 13-14 against Louisiana Tech. In match two, the program takes on Jackson State in lanes 17-18. In the third match, Tulane and North Carolina A&T square off in lanes 21-22. The fourth match sees the Green Wave against Florida A&M in lanes 5-6. The fifth match is a Tulane and Southern matchup in lanes 7-8. As a note to anyone watching the video from home, lanes 15-20 will be the ones most visible on the stream.
The second day of the tournament on Saturday is a format of five (5) traditional team games. Tulane begins the second day against Alabama A&M on lanes 9-10. The second match of the day and the seventh match overall features Tulane and UAB in lanes 15-16. In the third match of the day and the eighth match overall, the Green Wave and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore are competing in lanes 19-20. In the fourth match of the day and the ninth match overall, Tulane and Stephen F. Austin are in lanes 21-22. In the fifth match of the day and the 10th overall, the Green Wave and Lincoln Memorial are in lanes 5-6.
On the third day, teams will compete in three rounds of match play in a playoff bracket. Each of the rounds in match play will be a best-of-seven baker match.
The playoff rounds will be seeded using overall total pin fall standings after the qualifying round (day one) is completed. The higher seed has the choice of starting lane for the first baker game with one exception. The exception is if the match goes to a single deciding baker game, the higher seed has the choice.
The first, second and third place teams will be awarded the team awards.
The five individuals that accumulate the highest pin fall totals during the traditional team games will earn a position on the all-tournament team. The MVP award is given to the individual with the highest tournament average.
The complete list of teams at the tournament is Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Florida A&M, Jackson State, Lincoln Memorial, Louisiana Tech, North Carolina A&T, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston State, Southern, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Southern, UAB and Maryland Eastern Shore.
At the Colonial Lane Classic this weekend, all fans are encouraged to support herdrive.org by bringing general items for people of need. Baron is one of the co-founding members of the non-profit organization, which was launched in June 2020, that provides bras, menstrual care, and general hygiene products to people in need in an effort to combat period and hygiene poverty. Baron, a future aspiring physician, serves as the leader of the Host Your Own Drive Program and manages the web design and volunteer coordination. To date the organization has received 33,136 new and gently used bras, 763, 687 menstrual care items and 307, 551 general hygiene items. Â
Last weekend at the Rattler Classic, Tulane finished second overall after falling to Emmanuel College in the championship match. The Green Wave went 10-0 on the first two days of the tournament. Amelia Vasquez was named the MVP as well as to the All-Tournament team after finishing with the most pins (1065) and with the highest average at the tournament (213). Morgan Gitlitz placed sixth overall with her 1014 pins and average of 201.0. Mia Stolakis earned seventh with 997 total pins and 199.4 average. Katharina Mente had an average of 201.67 and accumulated 605 pins in three games. Sofia Druchya had an average of 213.50 with 427 pins in two games. Yarelis Alvarez had an average of 200.5 with 401 pins in two games. Cassidy Williams had an average of 187.5 with 375 total pins in two games. Jenica Baron had an average of 242 pins with the same total in the one game she played in.
This year's Tulane roster features five returners in sophomore Katharina Mente, senior Jenica Baron, junior Morgan Gitlitz, senior Amelia Vasquez and junior Yarelis Alvarez. Joining the program are three newcomers in freshman Cassidy Williams, sophomore Sofiia Druchyna and freshman Mia Stolakis.
Next, the program gets back on the road on Oct. 28-30 at the Dezy Strong Classic in Corman, New York.
Tulane's bowling team finished the 2022 season ranked No. 19 in RPI and had an overall record of 57-47. The program won the Southwest Intercollegiate Conference Tournament in the fall and qualified for a berth in the Intercollegiate Team Championships in the spring. The team saw Madison McCall named an Honorable Mention All-American by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). It was the sixth straight year that Tulane has seen a member of its bowling team honored by the NTCA. The program also had seven individuals honored with places on the 2022 Academic Honor Roll for the Southland Conference (Crystal Singh, Veronica Petrinec, Baron, Vasquez, Gitlitz, Alvarez and Mente). The program also had two All-Conference performers as McCall was Second Team All-Southland Conference, while Mente was chosen for the All-Rookie Team. Additionally last season, Baron was chosen as the American Athletic Conference's Community Impact Award Recipient.
